The 2nds played Athenlay today, a team who had been at the top of the league for most of the season and it would be a good challenge for the team.
Once again, we played out from the back and into midfield and looked very comfortable, moving the ball into good spaces and trying to test their full backs. However, a poor pass from a usually ever reliable Kurt resulted in Athenlay driving into our penalty area and slotting the ball past Romeo to open the scoring and 1-0 to them. Parkwood settled back into the match and looked to have equalised from great interplay between Michael and Danny, but the goal was ruled out for a close offside.
As we got to half time, the team were relatively happy with how we were playing and felt we were very much in this game, and hence did not make any substitutes at the break.
We continued to play our football and got the reward we deserved as George scored his first of the season with a cracking left foot strike from just inside the box for 1-1. As the match entered the last few minutes, it looked like we were going to get a very good point against one of the league leaders, but disaster struck when a corner hit one of their players and the ball dropped into the net for a very late winner for Athenlay.
Overall, a great performance but a disappointing result.
