Parkwood Rangers Vs Bromleians Reserves

With Parkwood about to kick off their 4th to last league game of the season, they knew that a win would increase the pressure at the top of the table. However, with Bromleians coming off the back of an 8-1 win away at Peckham Town, they couldn’t afford

The game started scrappily, both teams failing to find any real passing rhythm, and neither keeper being tested fully. That was until roughly the half hour mark. Harry Scott turned and headed towards the Bromleians goal, seeking out a seemingly lost Ben Malyon, who was marauding down the right wing. Then, for possibly only the second time in his 20 year Parkwood career, Ben beat a man for pace and knocked the ball past the onrushing full back, before sweeping in a cross to the Bromleians box. The cross was met brilliantly by the leaping forehead of Harry Scott, who directed the ball goalward, in off the woodwork. 1-0 up after possibly breaking the longest distance for a one-two ever recorded in the history of the game*.

After the standard few clichés, from the enigmatic as always, Doug Scott (smile as wide, if not as full as ever, as a Cheshire cat after seeing his son score for the first time since November), the technical bits of information were left to the team’s Coach. Thankfully. One sub at half time to bring on a second out-and-out winger, and to try and kill off this game.

Despite dominating, and carving out a few half chances, it took a while for Parkwood to grab the second. But they did. After a bit of pinball mixed with head tennis, the ball was seemingly cleared out towards the edge of the Bromleians box, but Nathan Parke had other ideas. With his back to goal, and swivelling his hips round in a fashion that Shakira would have even struggled with, he caught the ball on the volley and rifled it into the top right hand corner. So caught up in the euphoria of scoring such a glorious goal, Nathan almost removed his shirt. Luckily he remembered where he was, and that he is rapidly on the path to 30 years of age, and refrained.

Although they were 2-0 up, and a few changes were made, with players swapping positions, the pressure still rained down on the Bromleians goal. Finally a third went in, after a few set pieces had come close, the ball fell to birthday boy Nathan Cross, who unleashed a venomous left footed strike, through the crowd between the ball and the goal. It was now 3-0 and Parkwood were on their way to 3 points. Heading back to the changing rooms the other results filtered in, and Equinoccial’s beating of Tudor, meant that with 3 games left in Parkwood’s season, they were now joint top, only second by a couple of goals.

This Saturday sees Parkwood take on Danson, who despite leading the table for a lot of the season, have fallen to 5th in recent weeks. With Tudor (1st) playing Welling Town (4th), this is one of Parkwood’s biggest games to date.
